John J. Bowman and The Birth of Kentucky

John J. Bowman was an American pioneer and one of the original militia and legislative leaders of Kentucky County, Virginia, later incorporated as the great state of Kentucky. Bowman had four brothers and fought for American Independence. Later elected as the first presiding judge of Kentucky County in 1779 he was a predominant fixture in Virginia and Kentucky as they evolved into the states we know today. Years later in 1927 John's descendants purchased a parcel of land in Fredricksburg, Virginia known as Sunset Hills. In 1935 shortly after Virginia repealed prohibition A. Smith Bowman, with a surplus of grains established his own distillery after his namesake. Purchased by the Sazerac company and later led by the esteemed and sadly late Truman Cox, A.
