John J. Bowman and The Birth of Kentucky

John J. Bowman was an American pioneer and one of the original militia and legislative leaders of Kentucky County, Virginia, later incorporated as the great state of Kentucky. Bowman had four brothers and fought for American Independence. Later elected as the first presiding judge of Kentucky County in 1779 he was a predominant fixture in Virginia and Kentucky as they evolved into the states we know today.

Years later in 1927 John's descendants purchased a parcel of land in Fredricksburg, Virginia known as Sunset Hills. In 1935 shortly after Virginia repealed prohibition A. Smith Bowman, with a surplus of grains established his own distillery after his namesake. Purchased by the Sazerac company and later led by the esteemed and sadly late Truman Cox, A. Smith Bowman distillery has continued the legacy of American ingenuity and dexterity.

Thus it is no surprise that their John J. Bowman single barrel is in a league of its own. Coming in at 100 proof this silky smooth Virginia Straight Bourbon Whiskey surprises the senses. Tripled distilled with no age statement and the four Virginia seasons to buffer its development in charred oak barrels, this single barrel exemplifies the pioneer spirit of yore.

Nose: woody, with pear, molasses, sweet corn and caramel.

Palate: oaky, with cedar notes, slight vanilla notes, with burnt sugar and a strong emphasis on pear and apple notes.

Finish: Lingering brown sugar, with a bit of a bite smack dab in the middle followed by a deliciously smooth burn that peters out leaving an oaky-cedary dryness that leaves your palate craving more.
